Your Genetic Coeliac Disease Test Questions Answered
Coeliac disease is a genetic autoimmune disorder that affects the small intestine. It is triggered by the ingestion of gluten, which is found in wheat, barley, and rye. When someone with coeliac disease consumes gluten, it causes an immune response that damages the lining of the small intestine, leading to a range of symptoms and potential complications.
All we need from you is a simple cheek swab. From there, it is tested at a UKAS-accredited laboratory to see if the genes linked to coeliac disease are present.
We use a buccal sample, which is a swab from the inside of your cheek.
The test is accurate in determining if you have one or both genes associated with coeliac disease. If one or both genes are present, the results will show whether your risk for developing coeliac disease is low, medium, or high. If neither marker is present, you are unlikely to develop coeliac disease.
However, it’s important to note that having these genes doesn’t necessarily mean you will develop coeliac disease, just as not having them doesn’t mean you won’t develop it.
Although they may share many of the same symptoms, coeliac disease is not the same as a wheat allergy or gluten sensitivity or intolerance.
